Free places on courses for unemployed

Posted: June 25, 2010

The Shannon Consortium and its associated partners have secured €1.4m in funding as part of the national Labour Market Activation Fund announced by the Tánaiste and Minister for Education & Skills, Mary Coughlan TD. This significant award will assist the Consortium in funding 28 programmes designed to facilitate young people who are long-termed unemployed to up-skill and re-skill and to support them in their re-entry to the labour force.

The Shannon Consortium was established by the University of Limerick, Limerick Institute of Technology, Mary Immaculate College and the Institute of Technology Tralee with support from the Strategic Innovation Fund. The collaboration encompasses (a) access initiatives for under represented groups; (b) teaching & learning innovations; (c) retention supports; (d) a regional graduate training network; and (e) joint procurement systems.

Following its successful bid under the recent Labour Market Activation Fund the Consortium together with its collaborating partners will offer a total of 28 programmes all of which are validated on the National Qualifications Framework.

For the purposes of this Fund, participants on programmes eligible for Fund support  must  be  in receipt of an unemployment payment for a period of at least  three  consecutive months, or equivalent thereof, before joining the programmes  (time  spent  on  training  or  education  programmes  will  be reckonable for this three-month period).

The programmes will provide in excess of 500 places for job seekers throughout the region and beyond. They will be delivered in a flexible manner so as to facilitate maximum engagement with our key target cohorts. All of the programmes offered are coherent with the skills identified by the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs and the Smart Economy Report; and/or they are closely aligned to the specific needs of the Shannon Region.
