Labour Market Activation
Details of Ennis Labour Market Activation programme
Ennis Regional Learning Centre is delighted to announce that as of September 2010 we will run a Certificate in General Studies under the Labour Market Activation programme. This is a one year full-time course (18-20 hours per week) that is coordinated by Ennis RLC on behalf of the Shannon Consortium partners - University of Limerick, Mary Immaculate College, Limerick Institute of Technology and Institute of Technology Tralee. The programme will also be delivered in collaboration with Clare V.E.C.
The programme will prepare students for entry to first year of a third level undergraduate programme. Once completed, students will have a solid foundation in subjects that are common to many undergraduate programmes. Thre programme helps students to increase their confidence in their ability to take part fully in third level education adn to develop good life-long study habits.
Accreditation and progression
Successful completion of the Certificate offers students a FETAC Level 5 Certificate in General Studies and direct entry to a range of undergraduate programmes in the Shannon Consortium parnter institutions. Progression options available are dependent on the specialist electives chosen by the student (see below). Students must achieve an overall MERIT on the Certificate to secure their guaranteed place on the undergraduate programme of their choice.
Course Syllabus
The Certificate in General Studies is structured in two parts. Each student must complete three core modules.
Core Modules
- Communications and Personal Effectiveness
- Business Information Technology
- Community and Enterprise Studies
(Please note that Humanities modules are subject to change which will be advised at a later date)
Students will also have a choice of two elective streams in Humanities or Science each of which contain three modules.
Humanities stream
- English Language and Literature
- Local History and Theology
- Community and Enterprise Studies
OR
Science stream
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Mathematics
Entry requirements
Applicants must be over 18 years of age and must be in receipt of an unemployment payment, or equivalent, for a period of at least three months, before taking up a place on the programme. Priorty for places will be given to those who have not yet achieved a Level 5 qualification (e.g., Leaving Certificate or equivalent). Evidence of unemployment status and duration must be provided by applicants. This can be obtained from your local social welfare office.
Course fees
The will be not be a fee for Labour Market Activation eligible students. There may be a charge for those who are not eligible under Labour Market Activation.
