Course Syllabus
Successful completion of the course will offer students a FETAC Level 5 Certificate in General Studies and direct entry to a number of undergraduate programmes in the Shannon Consortium parnter institutions. The progression opportunities available are dependent on the specialist elective subjects chosen byt the student.
The Certificate in General Studies is structured in two parts:
A. 3 core modules that all students must complete
B. 2 specialist electives, each containing 3 modules. Each student chooses one of these electives.

Entry Requirements
In 2010 /11 the Certificate in General Studies is being jointly funded by the Labour Market Activation (LMA) Programme 2010 and the Department of Education and Skills Back to Education Initiative (BTEI). Priority for places will be given to those who have not yet achieved a Level 5 qualification (e.g. Leaving Certificate or equivalent). Applicants must be over 18 years of age and must be in receipt of an unemployment payment for a period of at least three months, or equivalent, before taking up a place on the programme. Evidence of unemployment status and duration must be provided by applicants. This can be obtained from your local Social Welfare office.
Applicants must satisy the eligibility criteria for both LMA and BTEI.
Course Fee:
For students who meet the criteria for priority places there is no course fee; otherwise a maximum fee of €350 may be charged (to be confirmed). The Certificate in General Studies is approved for the Back to Education Allowance (BTEA). The qualifying period for the BTEA, second level option, is 3 months.
Additional Information
The Certificate in General Studies is a one- year full-time programme which is coordinated by the Ennis Regional Learning Centre on behalf of the University of Limerick, Mary Immaculate College, Limerick Institute of Technology and Institute of Technology Tralee. The programme will be delivered in collaboration with the Clare V.E.C.
The programme prepares students for entry to the first year of a third-level undergraduate programme. It allows students to develop skills which will be useful to them in higher education, such as study skills, communications and information technology skills. It also gives students an opportunity to study a specialist subject area such as humanities or science and to experience life in higher education by studying these subjects on campus in partner institutions.
